This past Saturday we had the first workday of the year, and we had a LOT of projects that needed to get done before the huge rainstorm that is coming our way!
First, we had 40 yards of mulch delivered last week. The owner of the property was kind enough to move the huge pile around the property so we just had to spread it- even then, it was quite a bit of work! We were able to cover all of the open areas which will help with dust and erosion on the property!
Secondly, even though we raised Tillie’s stall about 8 inches a few months ago, the water table is so high right now that during the last rain a part of her stall flooded. We put 2,000 pounds of gravel underneath her shelter to raise her stall so is now hopefully higher than the water table, and then covered the gravel with dirt and mats. This should help keep Tillie safe and dry!
Third, we noticed that during the last rain that LadyBug’s stall started to flood, so we purchased railroad ties and put those under her shelter so that area would remain safe and dry! She has mats as well underneath the shelter so she can stand on a clean, flat surface.
Fourth, we put seven railroad ties around the round pen in order to keep it from flooding.
Fifth, we pulled some of the more invasive weeds to prevent those from encroaching on the horses’ stalls.
Sixth, we had some awesome younger volunteers helping in cleaning the grain buckets so the horses would have clean buckets to eat from!
Many thanks to ALL of the incredibly hard-working volunteers who came out on Saturday! They worked so hard that we were even finished early! We culminated the workday with a lovely tour of the horses.
Thank you to everyone who came out on Saturday!
We have another workday coming up on Saturday March 23rd. If you can make it, we can use the help. Sign up here!
