We thought we would give everyone an update on Bear! He has been with us for about six weeks, and is gaining weight steadily! Last week we finished up his vaccinations, and he was very good for all of them. We did not have his teeth done, as the vet said that they were OK for now, but we will check them again in about six months to make sure. Our vet did suggest that he be switched from hay to hay pellets, however, so he is now eating alfalfa hay pellets in addition to his grain.
Last month we had his feet done, and had his shoes taken off. His feet were done quite poorly, but he seems to be comfortable without shoes, so we will leave him barefoot and allow his feet to grow out. The farrier seems to think it will take a few trims to get his feet back to normal.
Bear has a lot of energy and needs a turnout before being groomed, but he does stand nicely while being groomed for our volunteers. He does pick up his feet very well, which is always nice.
We have been waiting for Bear to gain enough weight and muscle tone before starting any real work, but he has been doing very well this past week, so we fitted a bridle to him and longed him to see what he knew. It was amazing! Bear has been silly and spazzy in the arena, but the minute we put a bridle on him, he went into frame, and trotted nicely and even sported a lovely little canter! It was honestly like working a different horse! We are intrigued, and look forward to other surprises that Bear has to offer us.
Today we gave Bear a snazzy new haircut, and he seemed to enjoy the attention.
We are looking for people who are willing to sponsor Bear as we finish up his rehabilitation. If you are interested in sponsoring Bear, please click here!
