Update 1/9/24: We received word that Maverick has found a home! Thank you to everyone who helped to network him!

San Diego, CA: We received a message from someone who unfortunately is no longer able to keep his horses. He found a home for one, but is still looking for a home for a horse he rescued a few months ago named Maverick.
Maverick is a 15 year-old grey Mustang who had been purchased for use as a lesson horse, but who needed training and was not an appropriate fit for their program. Instead of selling him or finding him a new home, the training program essentially just let him languish in his stall and did not work with him for two years. His current owner purchased him just to get him out of that situation, knowing he would not be able to keep him long-term, but at least offering him a chance at a decent life.
He has worked with Maverick for the past 5 months and his owner has said he has come a long way. The owner has worked on desensitizing him and has even ridden him. His owner says that he has some training under saddle and will collect when being ridden, but really prefers to be out in the pasture with other horses. He would need a high intermediate or experienced rider.
Maverick is about 15 hands. He has a benign mass on his lip, so he needs a hackamore when he is ridden. He currently gets soaked pellets because of the mass on his lip.
