For Adoption: Abe the Mule

April 3, 2024 By ezarkos

Abe, the mule is looking for his forever home.

We told the story of Abe a few months ago when we rescued him from slaughter last year, and he has spent the last eight months working with a trainer, getting him used to people and able to be handled.

Abe about three or four years old, and is very sweet but has a strong fear response. He doesn’t try to bite or kick, but he still has difficulty trusting people and is uncertain about people and will try to run away when people come up to him. When he does trust someone, he can be haltered and worked with, but it takes some time and patience. He picks his feet up for the farrier, and is good in the trailer and will stand at the tie rail. He has done quite a bit of sensory work and the trainer even put a saddle on him (just to practice; he definitely is nowhere near trained enough to ride).

We were hoping that by now Abe would be farther along, but we will continue to work with Abe to get him more confident. He seems to like people- he is just very fearful. He would need a very experienced person who really wants to help him learn that people can be kind, they can even be your best friend. If you are that person, please fill out our horse inquiry form and we will contact you. Please note that all of Hanaeleh’s horses (and mules!) have a first right-of-refusal, so no flippers, please. We are looking for a forever home for Abe.
