When Garnet came to Hanaeleh in August, she had been living with an unchecked breathing issue for a very long time. She had been passed from one owner to another, with her breathing continuing to deteriorate. Garnet’s 7-Week Update
Garnet continues to do well after her arytenoidectomy- the surgery that cut away part of the inflamed and infected area around her larynx. We have been slowly weaning her off of the steroids, and she seems to be comfortable at rest in her stall. When we took her in a few months ago, her breathing was labored even at rest- now her breathing is quiet and she seems much healthier. UPDATE: Garnet (October, 2021)
Garnet has been out of the hospital for a little over a week, and we had Dr. Fertig come out to determine what our next steps should be. She said that Garnet's wounds look great, and to continue to clean them up as we have been doing. She said that Garnet can have treats now, too, so that has made Garnet a MUCH happier horse! Days Eleven & Twelve: Monday 10/4 and Tuesday 10/5 We spoke with the doctor who said Garnet was healing well, but her breathing was still very labored. While it wasn't as bad as it was before the surgery, it was still obvious that she was not comfortable.
