We had several people come out to our work day on Sunday, and with their help we were able to get a LOT done! First, we put in two yards of gravel and sand underneath Quixote and Lou Dillon's stalls to help level them out and raise them a little. There is an underground spring that will sometimes bubble up after the rain, and while they are on stall mats with shavings, the stalls have gotten a little cattywampus, and our hope too was that we could raise the stalls just above the water table … [Read more...]
Horses and the Rain
This winter has been incredibly frustrating at the ranch. We deal with one winter storm only to be hit a week later by another. It's been difficult on both the volunteers as well as the horses, as the mud makes everything more arduous. This year has also been unusually COLD, which has meant that we have had to break out more blankets than usual, and we've even had to put two blankets on when it is obvious that the horse is still cold. RIP Darren
We are very sad (well, many of us are sad) to have to report that Darren the rooster has passed away. He was almost 13 years old (most roosters live 6-8 years). He was found mostly unresponsive on Thursday, and Elizabeth took him home so he could be warm and dry. He passed quietly and peacefully that evening. RIP Hershey
It is with great sadness that we report this past week we had to help Hershey cross the Rainbow Bridge. Hershey was a 27 year-old Appendix (Thoroughbred and Quarter horse cross) who was one of our first rescues. He was a show jumper, but his owner could no longer afford him, and he had some personality *quirks* that made him difficult to work with.
