Sheldon NWR Prepares to Remove Horses, Advocates Prepare Litigation
(Winnemucca, NV) On August 30th, Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge was sent a letter on behalf of Bonnie Kohleriter, a private individual, and Laura Leigh, President of Wild Horse Education, attempting to address serious issues concerning the Refuge’s plan to remove 412 wild horses starting September 9th. Humane Society of the United States speaks out against BLM refusing to grant captive horses shelter
1800 horses that have been captured by the BLM have been standing in holding pens in over 100 degree weather with no shade in a holding pen near Reno, Nevada. When the Humane Society of the United States (as well as several other organizations!) requested that shade be provided for these horses, the BLM refused. New Budget May Stop Slaughter Plants from Opening in U.S.
Over the past few months, six slaughter plants have requested authorization to start slaughtering horses in the U.S. Governor Fallin in Oklahoma, only last week signed a bill that would allow slaughterhouses in Oklahoma to open, even though the majority of her constituents are against horse slaughter.
