It is with great sadness that we have to report the passing of Maggie Rose this weekend. Maggie had been having health difficulties since July, and although her owner had worked with nutritionists and veterinarians, Maggie continued to go downhill. Her owner finally made the difficult decision to put Maggie down.
Maggie was an Arabian cross who was already elderly when she came to us in July, 2012 from the Riverside Animal Shelter. She was scheduled for euthanasia on Monday, and we picked her up that previous Saturday, along with Ulysses. Maggie was severely emaciated and had skin and hoof issues. It took almost a year for us to rehabilitate her so she was healthy and able to be ridden. We also determined through a blood test that she was cushionoid, and so she was put on daily medication.
Her owner, Sally, adopted Maggie in August, 2013. Sally had been our vice president at the time, and enjoyed working with Maggie when she came out to volunteer. Maggie lived at Hanaeleh for a while and then moved up to Sally’s daughter Natalie’s backyard, where she lived with Natalie’s other rescued horses. Sally rode and did a little driving with Maggie, but for the most part, Maggie was retired, and enjoyed hanging out with her other equine friends.
We are very sorry to hear about Maggie’s passing, but we know that Sally and Natalie did everything that they could to keep Maggie’s final years safe and happy. Maggie spent her final years knowing that she was very much loved.
