1800 horses that have been captured by the BLM have been standing in holding pens in over 100 degree weather with no shade in a holding pen near Reno, Nevada. When the Humane Society of the United States (as well as several other organizations!) requested that shade be provided for these horses, the BLM refused. The BLM’s response to all concerned is that the horses do not require shelter and can “cope” with temperatures which can soar above 100 degrees!
The BLM has a responsibility to care for the horses that it rounds up and takes in. They have a responsibility to give them adequate food, water AND SHELTER. If the horses were allowed to remain free in the wild, they would be able to seek out shelter for themselves. As the BLM has seen fit to round them up and essentially put them in a large cage, they therefore have to take on the responsibility to provide the horses the shelter that they cannot gain on their own.
Please take a moment to read the letter the HSUS has sent in response to the BLM.
