UPDATED: SAFE! San Diego, CA: 25 y/o Paint Gelding Needs Home

October 23, 2023 By ezarkos

UPDATE 11-13-23- We received word that Arroyo found a forever home! He will live out the rest of his life with a small herd of other rescued horses. Thank you to everyone who helped share him!

Help Arroyo find a home.

We were contacted by a woman who helped to rescue a horse who had been neglected. Arroyo is a paint gelding, probably in his mid-20s. He had been a mounted patrol horse when he was younger, and then was used as a lesson horse for kids. Unfortunately he developed a swayback and the lesson program did not accommodate his physical needs, and used him until he ended up with an issue with his hip and vertebra. It doesn’t seem to hurt him at liberty, but he is unable to canter on the left lead. He also has some arthritis that one would expect in a horse that had been overused in a lesson program.

Arroyo can no longer be ridden, but the owner says that he is very sweet and gets along with everyone- people and horses. He has excellent ground manners and likes children.

Arroyo had been neglected after he was no longer useful for the lesson program- his stall was not cleaned, he was not fed appropriately and his vet and farrier care were neglected. The woman who rescued him helped him to get back to his former self, but unfortunately she is suffering health problems of her own and had been placed on disability. This means she is unable to care for or pay for Arroyo’s care. She is now looking for someone who can help take on the responsibility of caring for Arroyo so he isn’t neglected again.
