Hope and Grace in the arena
Hope and Grace are two bonded Arabian mares who came to Hanaeleh when their owner could no longer care for them. The were underweight and clearly in need of some love.
After we get them back into better health, Hope and Grace were adopted out for a short time as therapy horses, but the facility where they were living burned down during the Malibu Fire in 2018. Hanaeleh always takes back our horses if the new owner is no longer able to care for them so we welcomed them back with open arms.
Grace is around 34 this year, and while she has some arthritis, she still likes to boss the other horses around. Hope is about 10 years younger, but she has DSLD, which means her suspensory tendons in her lower legs are degenerating. This is a congenital issue so all we can do is limit her exercise and make sure her feet are trimmed regularly every six weeks. Both girls are on a daily pain medication to keep them comfortable and they are living their BEST lives.
There’s only one small issue with these two lovely ladies – they are so bonded that it’s difficult to work one without the other- so when we groom them, we make sure they stand side-by-side, and we make sure that we don’t take one too far away from the other. We all have that special friend we want to be around, right?
Hope and Grace are very sweet, good-natured horses, and enjoy being groomed by the volunteers.
The girls will live out their lives at Hanaeleh and are very happy and comfortable in their retirement.
